Shalom! I am from Toronto Canada. I was very excited to see this webpage about Kibbutz Nir David. I was on the ulpan for 4 months in 1973. I had a memorable time. My Kibbutz parents were Avraham and Malka Davidson who were extremely kind to me and made me feel very welcome. They had a daughter who I had met previously in Canada. I am wondering if the Davidsons are still alive and how their daughter is doing. Athough I had studied Hebrew, before I came to the Kibbutz, my Hebrew improved tremendously. I remember working in the fields, getting up early to go out work, and then going to class after work. I had a roomate Haim from Georgia in Russia and wonder if anyone may know anything about him. As for me, I was serious about making Aliya for a while; when the Yom Kippur War broke out, I wanted to return but was unable to. I now live in Toronto, am married and have 2 daughters. I stumbled across this webpage as I had been viewing the webpage of Kibbutz Ein Gev, where one of my daughters stayed recently. She is currently on a Birthright trip. When I realized how easy it was to locate the guestbook for Ein Gev, I decided to do a search for Nir David. It is interesting to read the comments of many of the volunteers who followed me. I would love to hear from anyone who might have been on Nir David at the time that I was there. Shalom Paul Parnass Ulpan 1976 |

Hi, My name is Sandi Woodcock from Liverpool in England. I lived in the Kibbutz from June 1997 for around 4 months. I had the pleasure of meeting some amazing people from all around the world, but have unfortunately lost contact with most the volunteers included Mirjam Ter Welles, Matt, Grant, Kevin from south Africa and lts and lots more. I also met some great Kibbutzniks Ajule, Or Yoffi, Elad Mirzeraki. If anyone has anyone mentioned emails I would be delighted to get in touch with them. I currently live in Sydney were I have been studying for the last 2 years. Nir David was one of the best experiences of my life, it was a paradise, I take great comfort in thinking back to those days of guitars, swimming in the Sakni and ramat David... Hope to hear from someone Sandi Woodcock |

Hello from Finland Hi, I'm from Turku, Finland and I came to Nir-David in autumn 1997. I volunteered there four unforgettable months. The place is beautiful and local israelis were really friendly. I worked mostly in the construction with Giddon, Adrian, Andy etc. I met great and some very original people from Finland, England, South Africa, Argentine, Sweden, Denmark, France, Canada and some other countries too there! It is impossible to list all of you here but you know who I am and I know you:-) It was loads of fun! Especially many Ramat David wednesdays were unforgettable. Also christmas and new parties were crazy revelry I never forget. If I didn't party or work, I just whiled away by playing my yellow guitar in my room or in the TV room. It would be nice to know how you all are doing now...so don't hesitate to send mail! All the best Tuomas |

Dear Web Manager, Greetings to all Sherut La'amers I would like my name and thoughts placed into your guestbook. I remember all so vividly. I remember the "family" I was assigned to Yitzhak Chamsami (translit.) He taught me the fine art of wood carving. I wished that I had learned more. Most of all I remember Mirka our Kibbutz mother who looked after us. I remember as well the daily ulpan classes. I was a Sherut Laam volunteer that arrived with my group on or around July/August of 1967. I remained on the Kibbutz for about seven months waiting for permanent placement somewhere in Israel. More on that later. Remember our living quarters were near the horse stables not far from the ulpan class rooms. We were four to room. I still remember my roommate's names, Stuart from Chicago I think, David and Jerry from California. I have many memorable visions of some of the more enjoyable moments and one or two not so enjoyable moments. We were all assigned "step parents" to look after us. My "stepfather" was Yitzhak Chamzani (changed form some long Polish name). He enjoyed carving animals form olive wood. He taught me how to carve and I really enjoyed it. I believe that he has a son and daughter that lived on a near by Kibbutz. Mirka was our guardian mother and she looked after us like her own. She was also one of our Ulpan teachers. The regime went like this - very early wakeup, quick cup of some black stuff (chicory I think) and off to the work assignment. We would stand outside the dining hall to retrieve our weekly assignments. Some weeks you won and some weeks you lost. My first work task was to pick to olives. I was in heaven as I loved olives, green, black makes no difference. I remember thinking to myself "this is pretty neat I can eat all the olives I want." I still remember placing that first green olive into my mouth and biting down on it. No one ever told me that olive need to be cured first. Grapefruit came next, then cotton. My most enjoyable task was being allowed to drive the tractor. A non-kibbutznik being allowed to drive the tractor! This was unheard of. My most horrendous task was being assigned to work in the Tarnagolts (turkeys). I can still remember the smell. I loved Nir-David and wished that I was a wiser man when there to appreciate all that it had to offer. I was most impressed with the abundance of sculptures around the grounds and the Beit Tarboot. I remember that we were required to put on a performance for the kibbutz members. Some fond memories, practicing my first Hebrew sentence (I tried to study before I left the States) sitting across from a kibbutz member I looked him in his eye and said so proudly "Hsheleg yored kol hboker." He looked back at me and started to laugh and said "but this is August!" At the time I did not know what I had said or what he meant. I remember the time the time that Jerry and I decided to visit nearby Nazareth. We "borrowed" a kibbutz Jeep and hot wired the ignition with a paperclip. We made it to Nazareth without a problem but on the return trip we hit a bump in the road and the paperclip fell off and the Jeep died. We walked back to the Kibbutz never saying a word to anyone. The next day there was hell to pay as the police and army were called in to investigate because it was believed that terrorists had stolen the Jeep. We both confessed our deed. There were other "such moments" but they are best left unsaid. I was eventually assigned to a school in Mitzphe Rimon as an English teacher. My original assignment was for one year but wound up staying three years and then returned to the States. I have often wondered what would be if I never returned. Most likely Yitzhak are gone now (I hope not) but so much time has passed. If any of my fellow Sherut Laam members want to contact me by all means please do so. This also goes for any kibbutz members as well. Joel Flamenbaum Tex. U.S.A |

Hello, I was a member of an ulpan at Kibbutz Nir David from September 1970 to March 1971. I only have few photographs and, unfortunately, I have not been able to return. What would be the best way to order the history? I know how difficult life in Israel is now. I have so many memories and would like to write a story. Hello, My name is Bernie Van Der Merwe. I am South African. I arrived on Nir-David in 1995 and met my very close friend Clinton Vermaak there. I arrived there with Gavin Drake. He was the very tall one and I the very short one. I remember Marien Overbeeke, Lorena Gabello Rojas and our volunteer leader Limor Ginat she was so sweet. She mostly put me with the dishes in the kitchen but I liked it. O yes I also remember working in the kitchen with Arri ( he made us quite a strong punch one day) Wonder were Arrie is now. I shared a room with a dutch guy named Peter. I also remember a guy by the name Gergio ( the guy with the scarred face) We lived in tele Vive together. Also Harry was his friend. O what good times we had. I live in Cambridge England now. Any body remember me? If you do Please get in touch. Miss you all (all the names on Marien Overbeeke list) Bernie Van Der Merwe Cambridge England |

Hello, I was sad to see the front page news that Fanka Goren had passed away but her memory lives on in these pages at least. She was a woman with incredible energy, wisdom and at the same time in tune with the younger members of the community - volunteers as well as members. It is almost twenty years since I first went to Nir David in October 1983 and I was pleased to see that there is a website for people like myself to see the development of Nir David and to remember. Myself and the other volunteers from that time had an amazing experience as remembered by others on the guest page. Those of us that have found the guest page all seemed to spent time working in fish and found the experience a rewarding one and a privilege to work alongside some of the kibbutzim's characters - Eldar, Ari, Gavri, Amichi, Micha, Arik, Etan, Smadar to name only a few. It was probably the hardest of all the jobs in the kibbutz (although I'm sure cotton workers will disagree. And also those that did grass. Actually working in the Sachne restaurant was pretty tough too) and the people the hardest of all the kibbutzniks to get to know but when you were accepted through your own hard work and sympathy for the culture then. I remember the exact day when I became accepted into the fold. In 1984 I worked with a Korean called Yong, a couple of Mexicans, Rafael and Jesus who were all studying aquaculture, for which Nir David is world renowned, and at the crack of dawn a "mish-lo-ach" (consignment) of several tons of fish was needed before daybreak. This was not considered to be a job for the workshy. My last time was in 1988 where I met one of my best friends who now lives here in England and still keep in touch with a few others. I hope to get back there on the 20th anniversary of my visit to see the changes since those days and often think of the people and place and how they have evolved. All the best. Stan Swaby London |
