Hi... My name is Nicholas. I lived one year in Nir-David 96-97, working in the fish. It was the best time of my life. I remember working with: Bison, Tal, John, Asaf, Gadi, Ajoul, Orlando, Elani and Eddie (SAF).... And of course Blanco!? It was a good job, but it was cold in the water during the winter. Anyway I`m missing Nir-David. I hope you guys are doing great. Nicholas |

Shalom, shalom my name was Peter and I arrived from Austria (hitch hiking) via Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Turkey in Israel early march 1967. In Kibbutz Nir-David.I joined a very well organised group of Volunteers from Switzerland (gruezi) remember our trip to Eilat? I have beautiful still frames from this trip through the Negev. My Kibbutz mother was Fanka (Zipora Goren) a wonderful and very special person. What triggered this letter? The sad news of a soldier fallen at jenin from Kibbutz Nir-David. I starlet to work in the Lul with munjo (forgive me my spelling but 35 long years have passed), he was polish and by the way spoke 8 languages. Also working with us was Giora another hero of mine and others whose names I have forgotten. But I still see them clearly in my mind. Life was great, the Kibutzniks great the food great and one of the Volunteers from Switzerland a pain in the butt, forgive me Emmanuel. Every Friday night we would dance the night away. Fanka was there after work, she was not only my mother but took others under her wings. Her little unit was full of books, artand litrature. She was not only well read and very intelligent, she was a sweet person, with a heart as big as her library. The air condition was natural and worked great, made our life a bit easier, it was a double wire frame filled with tree needles and a pipe on the top where troops of water wet the needles and a breeze of air would cool the darkened room. But dark clouds formed on the horizon. Israel prepared for war. The Swiss where recalled and hastily flew home. Two girls stayed behind, Veronica and Marieanne. Marianne later married Yossi and as far as I know settled in Switzerland, and Veronica married another Kibutznik. During the war I worked in the pardess with Nir (did you ever manage to go to Iraq as you planned?) I just worked double hard and one day had the shock of my life when watering very peacefully the grape fruit trees, suddenly a large group of soldiers came rushing down the Gilboa. As my knowledge of Hebrew was none and Arabic sounded just the same and it was war, I was scared. But when I saw the soldiers strip and plunge into the Sachne I was relieved. Sadly my friend, the very fine young man Giora was killed in action, my hero of 1967. Shortly after the war a large group of Jewish Volunteers from France and Canada joined us and some of the Swiss also returned. I shared my room with Gabriel and two others whose name I regretfully have forgotten. Next door was Paul, Jackie etc. Life was beautiful. As before the war we made trips to the Golan. Paul you remember Cesarea? With Batya, she was a nice of one of the Kibutzniks and was from Canada, we toured the north together. My personal life was shattered when one evening in Fankas house, the madrich of the Volunteers arrived by bicycle to tell me my mother had died. As I had spent all my money at the time Fanka took me to the Sochnut in Tel Aviv and arranged an immediate a air ticket for me. Orphaned at the age of 21 I decided to make alya. I arrived with a large group of Russian olim from Vienna and was sent to the Ulpan in Upper Nazareth. But now I live here in Western Australia-the climate and vegetation so similar to that of Israel that some nights I close my eyes and think I am still in Nir-David. We have here the easterly winds which is equivalent to a chamsim. If anyone reads this letter, it would mean a lot to me if I would be able to get in touch with my friends from 1967 especially Gabriel and Paul the artist. Shalom, shalom Ben-Pelech Western Australia |

Hello, I was a volunteer at Kibbutz Nir David from 1982 through 1983. I worked exclusively in the fish ponds during my stay at the Kibbutz. Of course, my thoughts are with everyone during this turmoil. I was wondering how they are all doing. I worked with Uri, Eric (sp?), etc. during my stay, including the Shrimp Man (cannot recall real name). Would love to hear how everyone is doing. Jill Glassman New Jersey U.S.A |

My name is Noah. I am 8 years old. I am learning about Israel, and the kibbutz. I picked your kibbutz from a list, and I enjoyed looking at pictures. I would like to learn more about the children that live on a Kibbutz in Israel. One thing I would like to learn is what kind of sports there are. What kind of food do they eat? What kind of vehicles are there? I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the United States. I am still learning about Israel and I would like to hear from children that live there Thank you. Noah Tulsa |

Hi , my name is Patrick. I volunteered on Kibbutz Nir David in 1981. I worked in the fish farms for several months with Amachi(sorry spelling?) and Uri and others. In light of events here in the United States. I have had an emergence of many fond memories of the short time in my life , that I spent at Kibbutz Nir David with the kibbutzniks who welcomed me to breakfast on the fish farm. I miss the catching of the fish and the hard work the most. I am writing to simply say hello and lend my arm and spirit in support of your kibbutz and the state of Israel. I am an American. I am neither Jewish nor Muslim. I believe in peace and self defense. I have no idea if this email will find its way to someone who keeps track of all the volunteers that have visited? If so, I hope it finds one of the guys who said good bye to me with that big Hershey's bar!!! Stay strong my friends and write if you can. Patrick from the summer of 1981. |

I came to Nir David in August or September 1967, which I believe was the first
year of Sherut La'Am, the program based loosely on the Peace Corps (which had
been established in the U.S. during the Kennedy administration), and also the
first year that Nir-David hosted volunteers. W e were placed at Nir David for
a 3 month Ulpan, after which we were to disperse different places in Israel for
our Sherut La'Am service. We arrived at night, and so didn't see our surroundings until the next morning. Indaylight, remember thinking that the kibbutz was an amazingly beautiful place. I felt like I was in a combination summer camp and semi-tropical paradise. There was a landscaped pond near the dining hall, the Asi River, and Gan HaShlosha (which we called Sachna). Our group of volunteers attended Ulpan for part of the day and worked for the remainder. My teacher was Tzila, and the other teacher was Miriam. We were all assigned to kibbutz host families. My kibbutz mother and father were Zvi and Mirka. I worked in a number of places- two were the Moadon (social hall) with D'vora, and in the dining hall, where I believe Ya'kov was in charge. Our accomodations were located next to the Ulpan classrooms. There were 4 in a room. In the hot weather there was an effective and ingenious method of cooling.> Dried vegetation was inserted between two window screens, and water was dripped through it to create air conditioning that was quite effective. When the weather got colder, heating was provided by kerosene stoves. This wasn't quite as pleasant because of the odor of the kerosene. The kibbutz provided meals in the dining hall, tea, and distributed Daphna cigarettes to smokers. On Thanksgiving we received a whole turkey so we could put on a real American Thanksgiving feast, though I think the kibbutzniks were a little bemused by the idea of roasting a turkey whole. None of the members of our group (all Americans or Canadians) stayed permanently on the kibbutz, and only a very few stayed permanently in Israel. One married a kibbutz member and they remained on the kibbutz for a number of years. Another married an Israeli.others remained in Israel, but I lost touch with them. I met my husband, another Sherut LaAm volunteer, on the kibbutz. We returned to the U.S. after living in Jerusalem for 7 years. The last time I was at the kibbutz was about 4 years ago. Thirty-three years after leaving Nir-David I still have strong feelings of affection and identification with Nir David and my kibbutz host family. Ruth Taylor
